Welcome to my You’re Enough campaign and blog series. I am on a mission to help women to find what they can achieve and give them the inspiration to shape their self-acceptance through the power of photography. It all starts with allowing yourself to be vulnerable and practicing a little bit of self-love. Beauty is all around us and within us at all times. Beauty has no limitations or boundaries – it’s everywhere if we open our hearts and minds to it. I want to show the world your beauty, confidence, and shine. And show the world that you’re enough. Isn’t that something all women need to hear?
Meeting and photographing these incredible women has touched me deeply. I’m so grateful for their trust and vulnerability. Special thanks to my talented hair and makeup artist Nicole Saavedra for being part of this experience. You can follow her on Instagram @nicole_christine_styling_llc
Our first woman to feature in our You’re Enough campaign is Crystal. I was touched by her story. And couldn’t wait to help her see herself in a different light during our photo session.
While growing up, Crystal had a definite opinion about what she thought beauty was – and I think it’s one many of us can relate to. To her, beauty meant being skinny and having long hair and nails. Anyone who has ever played with a Barbie doll as a child will understand why many girls see that as an ideal type of beauty. Unfortunately, having one definition of beauty made many of us feel inadequate at times.
While Crystal sometimes sees herself as beautiful these days, it’s been a bit of a struggle to get to this place in her life. When asked to share her story, including what’s made her who she is today, Crystal had this to say:
“It hasn’t always been easy, but it hasn’t been all bad either. I’ve struggled with mental health and weight issues all my life and was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have been in and out of bad relationships. I’m working hard on myself to break that cycle and build a healthier set of boundaries and self-view. I don’t want to repeat past mistakes. I have a wonderful support network built by friends and family. They are there for me and cheer me on every day.”
Crystal showed she belonged in our group of elite You’re Enough ladies when she left an abusive relationship. I applaud her for making that move. It takes an incredible amount of courage and belief in yourself to do that. She names that experience as the time in her life when she felt the most powerful.
The challenges Crystal has faced and overcome is why she wanted to put herself first by having beautiful photos taken.
“I’m working so hard on loving myself for who I am and not for who I think I ‘should’ be. Beautiful photos of myself would go a long way towards helping me reach that goal,” she said.
Although she’s had some hard knocks in life, she credits those struggles with making her the impressive woman she is today.
“I am powerful because I am unstoppable. I have been knocked down more times than I can count, but I never stay down.”
Crystal is gaining more confidence in herself and is shaping her life how she wants it to be. We’re all weighed down by the thoughts of failure sometimes. When Crystal was asked what she thinks she would do if she thought she couldn’t fail, here was her response:
“Everything. I’d expand my horizons at work. I’d talk to men I might normally shy away from because they intimidate me. I’d say no when I was in an uncomfortable situation instead of keeping quiet. I’d maybe even take a class or try a new hobby that I’ve been putting off.”
At the rate Crystal is going, it won’t be long before she tackles every goal on that list. It’s hard to keep a strong, determined woman down!
When asked to share what her favorite non-physical feature is about herself, she named her resilience. For the other women who sometimes fail to see their own beauty, she offers this advice:
“Say the same nice things to yourself every day that you would say to a friend who is not seeing the good in themselves. Be your own cheerleader first.”
I hope that the results of our photo session will help Crystal continue to be her own cheerleader. I know I’ll be cheering for her from the sidelines as she reaches all her goals.
There are few things I enjoy seeing more than watching a remarkable, beautiful woman realize how amazing she truly is. Crystal’s photo session showed her tough side, but also her courage. She allowed herself to take her guard down for our session. I was honored to be a part of it, and I loved the end result of her gorgeous photos.
Together, we’re accomplishing incredible things with our You’re Enough campaign. I hope it gives other women the encouragement they need in their lives to see that they, too, are enough!
