Here are 7 tips to help you unleash your inner supermodel for a women photoshoot. If you have your photo session coming up, you’re probably feeling a mix of emotions right now. You might be excited, nervous, and a little bit anxious. Don’t worry – that’s totally normal.
But here’s the good news – you don’t need to be Cindy Crawford to look fantastic in your portraits. If your idea of a catwalk is walking around your yard to call your feline inside for a meal, you’ll still be fine. I promise you don’t need modeling experience to look like one in your pictures.
All you need is some preparation and a little advice. Here are seven tips and pointers for pulling off a women’s photoshoot that will make other people’s jaws drop.
Tip #1: Clothes Matter
Anyone who has ever looked back at their high school photos and winced as they saw the shoulder pads and geometrical patterns will know how much wardrobe choices can make or break a photo.
I’ll have your back during the wardrobe consultation, giving you all the advice I can. I also have a studio collection of outfits, dresses, props, and jewelry that you can use for your session, at no extra cost to you.
Make choices you won’t regret. Here’s how you do that:
- Find something you feel comfortable in: When you feel comfortable, that will show in your picture.
- Choose something that reflects your style and personality: Your style can be vintage, rocker, urban, bohemian, chic, artsy, sexy, casual, sophisticated, tomboy, or preppy. What is your style?
- Don’t be afraid to experiment: Everybody’s personality has different facets. Choose an outfit that you feel safe and comfortable in, and then choose another that is like a more adventurous form of you. Have fun with it!
- Pay attention to the fit: The fit of your clothes should be flattering to your body type. Not sure about your outfit? Ask your bestie – she’ll be straight with you, but tactfully. If you’re flying solo on this and have no one to lean on for advice, go with form-fitting (but not overly tight) clothing. Your clothes should accentuate your figure – not look like they’re cutting off your air supply.
- Textured clothes are good: They can help camouflage any trouble spots. But busy patterns aren’t your friend – they can upstage your photo, stealing all your spotlight. The focus of the picture should be on you, not your clothes.
- Use colors cautiously: Find colors that compliment your skin tone. It can be a good idea to use neutral tones, especially if you have friends or family in the photos with you. That can help you avoid looking like a team of Power Rangers who are each wearing a different bright color.
Tip #2: Keep Your Hair and Make-Up on Point
Ever wonder how celebrities feel? Before their photoshoots, they have someone else doing their hair and make-up while they relax. At my studio, you get to experience that too. Get ready for some serious pampering!
Every client who books a women’s photoshoot with me will have a personalized hair and make-up session in my studio. It’s totally up to you how you want to be styled – natural, glamorous, or professional. We can also adjust the hair and make-up during your session as you change outfits. With little tweaks, you will get several looks from your portrait session.
My hair and make-up artist will make you look and feel gorgeous and camera-ready. Don’t let all that beauty and confidence go to waste – book a date night after your session because you’ll look amazing!
Tip #3: Boost Your Confidence Level in Front of the Camera
Photography is mutually empowering; it evokes vulnerability and strength – on both sides of the camera.
My clients are often asking me how I make them look so beautiful and confident. Even if you’ve never been a natural in front of the camera, there’s hope for you.
Part of the equation is how you feel – and with your fantastic wardrobe choices, your hair being perfectly styled, and your flawless make-up, you’ll already have a good start. Just think about how confident you feel when you’re having a good hair day – it’ll be like that feeling but on steroids.
And, in addition, during your photoshoot, I’ll guide you with expressions and poses that are flattering for you. If you don’t already know what your best side or facial angles are in a photo, I’ll help you find that. And if you have features you want to de-emphasize, share those with me.
Finally, part of the secret to making everyone look good in pictures is to relax them. I love using humor and laughter in the studio – I’m not afraid to act silly myself. And my clients often find this liberating!
Tip #4: Be Natural
The best photos are created when you act like yourself. Be natural during your photoshoot. Be the amazing you that everyone in your life falls in love with.
You might feel shy at first, and that’s okay. It will always take a little bit of time to get relaxed in front of the camera. It won’t be long before you start having fun and let your guard down. And that’s when the magic happens.
When you’re relaxed, your body language is inviting, and your expressions reflect your personality. That’s when your facial expressions, connection with the camera, and smiles will all come naturally, too.
And if you feel nervous during your portrait session, feel free to tell me. I’ve felt that way also, so I can relate.
Tip #5: Women Photoshoot and Beauty Checklist
Before your photoshoot, you can do several beautification steps that can make a huge difference in the final outcome of your pictures. These beauty preparations will also boost your confidence when stepping in front of the camera.
Choose the steps that fit your own beauty routine and budget. The most important things you can do before your photoshoot are relax, get plenty of rest and don’t stress out.
Tips #6: Get Inspired with a Vision
What is the vision for your photoshoot? Work with the power of the internet to make your dream shots a reality. Search for online forums to find ideas and inspirations. You can also look through my portrait galleries on my website.
Pick the images that call to you – the ones that appeal to you at first glance. If you create a vision board for your portrait session, please feel free to share it with me. Bring a few examples of poses you’d like to try or images that you love. We will make them uniquely yours.
Tip #7: Relax During Your Photoshoot!
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to relax during your photoshoot. If you only stick with one suggestion from this article, it would be this. Come to your portrait session with an open mind, have fun, and be yourself.
Afraid you’re still going to be uptight? Maybe we’ll have a glass of champagne to help you relax. Notice I said one glass – not three. The goal is to relax you, not turn you into Boozy Susie for your photoshoot!
Take a moment to unwind, stop taking care of others for one day, and just breathe. During your portrait session, enjoy pampering, play with beautiful outfits, and have fun in my studio. Everything will come together. Let’s create beautiful memories together – memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
